Ann Peebles was the major female star at Willie Mitchell's Memphis-based Hi Records during the '70s. Al Green was the label's major male star. Listen to the backing on I Can't Stand the Rain and then listen to Al Green's How Can You Mend A Broken Heart and the Willie Mitchell influence becomes obvious.
It is a little known fact that John Lennon liked lots of soul artists - his favourite male singer was Chuck Jackson and he was quoted as stating his favourite female soul singers as Ann Peebles singing I Can't Stand The Rain (covered by Tina Turner).

Many artists have done covers of Ann Peebles' tracks:-
Robert Palmer did I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down,
and Bette Midler Breakin'
