Aretha had been singing for many years before she became a soul star, she was a gospel star first, touring with her Father the Reverend Franklin and Sam Cooke.  Her fantastic gospel voice translated to hit soul tracks.
Aretha Franklin

After many years trying on other labels, it was Tom Dowd's belief in her at Atlantic that made her a recording star.In the latter half of the sixties Aretha became a massive soul star, most of her releases were fantastic on both the ‘a’ and the ‘b’ sides so she doubled up on our playlists. She featured more so at the Blue Note than other Manchester 60’s soul clubs.
These were outside the 1960s decade but just as brilliant:
Don't Play That Song - 1970
Spanish Harlem - 1971
Then on and on and on went her streams of hits
