The
Beatles were played at early beat clubs in Manchester such as the Twisted Wheel,
before it became a soul venue,
especially their Motown cover tracks.
The Beatles' second LP With The Beatles was very popular and
played quite often in its entirety at the old Wheel.
The only other
LP to be played from beginning to end was The Rolling StonesTHE ROLLING
STONES.
The Beatles (and Stones) brought attention to the blues and
soul music of America, bringing it to the clubs of the North of England. They
then exported it back to the USA to be discovered in its homeland by
white audiences.
Often people would hear white groups versions of R & B and blues and then find the
originals. The Beatles soon migrated to writing all their own material. The Rolling Stones
kept on doing copies of black original material. Although the Stones
were originally more popular than the Beatles at Manchester beat clubs (later
Soul venues) this changed as the originals became available and were played
exclusively. The Beatles were later respected again! They were played periodically at the Wheel long after the
Stones had been dropped.
