Major success was a long time coming for Gladys but even her more obscure
tracks were eagerly sought after by soul fans in the sixties - we all had a copy
of "Should Have Been Me".
Signing
with
Motown (Soul
Label) in 1966 Gladys Knight and The Pips (the Pips were all relatives) were
already well known for ‘Take Me In Your Arms And Love Me’ and ‘Just Walk In
These Shoes’ within the UK soul scene. In fact they had a long career before Motown beginning in 1952 as
The Pips. And yes another group starting in
gospel (and doesn't it show).
Their first single was originally done by
Johnny Otis; 'Every Beat Of My Heart' and the Pips did a
great bluesy version, not to be confused with the same title but completely
different song by the Du-Ettes. The Pips went to the top of the R&B charts
USA with it topping the Johnny Otis original. 'Letter Full Of Tears' and
'Operator' followed – then the great soul tracks we are most familiar with
‘Take Me In Your Arms And Love Me’ and ‘Just Walk In These Shoes’ became
massive on the UK soul scene.
1967 on Motown they had a major hit single with the original
of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' in the USA. 'The Nitty Gritty' (1968) and
'Friendship Train' (1969) and 'If I Were Your Woman' followed into
the1970s.Then of course Gladys went on
to bigger things.
