The
founder of Atlantic records with
Ahmet Ertegun. Herb Abramson sold the label to
Jerry Blaine in September 1947. However,
before Atlantic Herb owned Jubilee Records whose first success brought black
artists to the white record buying public in 1953 with "
Crying in the
Chapel,"

Herb started a
subsidiary called Josie in 1954 releasing "Speedoo" by the Cadillacs
in 1956 and "Do You Wanna Dance?" by
Bobby
Freeman in 1958.
Jubilee and Josie both went bust in 1970 with master tapes going
to Roulette and via Morris Levy selling Roulette to Rhino many old recordings
have been re-issued including a massive set from the Orioles (see link at the
foot of this page).
ATLANTIC was founded 1947 by
Herb Abramson and Ahmet Ertegun.
Jerry Wexler
replaced Herb in 1953.
