Bearded
beatnik South African Manfred Mann (Manfred Lubowitz), started his group with Mike Hugg and lead singer Paul Jones who currently
sings with the Blues Band and presents the UK Radio 2 Blues
Show. Manfred
Mann was a live band that played at The Brazennose Street
Twisted Wheel
in Manchester. Definitely one of the better groups performing at that time.
They
had a major hit with
54321 which also became the introduction theme tune for the TV show
Ready steady Go. They did many covers of original USA
soul and R 'n B artists such as
Do Wah Diddy Diddy originally by
The
Exciters and
Oh No Not My Baby originally
by Maxine Brown. At their inception they were Jazz and Blues influenced and the favourites played at the Twisted Wheel were included
Cock
A Hoop,
I'm Your Kingpin,
Don't Ask Me What
I Say and
54321. They eventually slid into full scale pop music and as a result were
dropped from the clubs' play list although it is fair to say that at this time
black soul music had taken over almost completely. However, Paul Jones now
virtually single handed keeps the blues scene alive in the UK.
