Muscle Shoals Sound Studios

Atlantic producer Jerry Wexler used a few notable independent recording studios to get a certain southern soul sound - Stax being one and Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals Florence Alabama being another.

Wilson Picket - "6345789" Percy Sledge - "When A Man Loves A Woman" were recorded here, as was most of Joe Tex's tracks. Aretha Franklin was recorded here: "I Never Loved A Man". Dan Penn wrote and recorded here. Bill Lowery brought in the acts and Rick Hall engineered them, starting in 1964 with Jimmy Hughes - "Steal Away".
