The Supremes were formed in
1961 in Detroit, Michigan - the home of the Motown sound and the home and birthplace of the Supremes.
The Supremes had a huge string of soul hits and many obscure
tracks that were all played at Manchester'sTwisted Wheel and all the other
soul clubs in the city. The polished performances may seem formulaic to the
Northern Soul aficionados but their popularity among mods and soul fans at the
time should not be under estimated.
Originally named The Primettes it took several years for
them to become successful.
Diana Ross and Florence (Flo) Ballard both sang lead vocals until
Diana's lead on When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes
became a success and enabled her to become the group's lead singer. The rest, as they say, is history.
