Message from Helen - 5th April 2009:

I was a regular for a long time at the Blue Night. Used to go fri, sat and sun. Loved the all-nighters. Best place to go for music. Could never understand why anyone would want to go all the way to Wigan Casino....the Blue Note was the best. My name then was Helen Johnson. The people who I knew back then who were regulars were Ann Rufai, Brian Sarge, Mike and Sammy Brown, Leroy Smith, Carl Green, a guy called Carol, twin sisters, can't remember their names...June (?) the guys in the band the Exits who had a car crash and Junior died....Dave Jawando....Stan Finney....Phyllis and Sonia Williams..Billy Marble, Gilly, Paul Mullins, Ray Turner, I remember the faces of loads more but not their names. I loved going there and dancing for hours.
Here are some more names of people who were regulars at the Blue Note Club: Frances, John, Phil and Tony Perrera Lynn Brooks Paul Udo Alf Cuffy Little Junior and Manny.

What I want to know, Helen, is: How come you knew everybody except me!!!!

I knew Sammy Brown very well and his sister who was already on the list - Shirley. Thanks for this invaluable info Helen.

1st Decemember 2008 - Derek Croft:

Hi. I and several mates used to go to the Bluenote on a regular basis around 1968 -69 mainly to the Saturday allnighter and then back in again for the Sunday morning session. I remember John and his Alvis and some of the DJ's. I used to work at Hawker Siddeley Aviation on Greengate, Chadderton as did Dave Lomas and Dave Phillips so got to know them quite well. Bought loads of rare soul records from them as they brought them over from the States. I actually did a spell as DJ there for several months but got got fed up of being threatened by some of the clientele if I didn't play the music they wanted also had my watch stolen at knife point in the gents loo. Despite all that, some great memories and we still talk about the place even though I am now 58 and cant do the dances anymore. Will always remember walking down the stairs to the sound of Breakout by Mitch Ryder or Walking up a one way street by Willie Tee. Great sounds! ... Derek Croft
