Bobby Byrd was a James Brown protégé who reputedly left the JBs in 1973 because of Brown's violent nature. He used to warm up the audience with his vocals before the main event began. He met James Brown when Brown was in a youth detention centre. Bobby Byrd was on a visiting baseball team and when Brown got out, he stayed with Bobby Byrd's family.



Bobby Byrd's funkiest soul solo was played at the Blue Note Manchester as was virtually all of James Brown's recordings old and new.
